Going Green 2014 - Day 6

Today we received our electric bill for the month of December, it was $25 higher than our projected amount of $124 (based on the average of our December electric bills from the past two years). After a quick phone call to OG&E, we discovered, sadly, that our rates hadn't increase, it was our usage. We knew we ran the heater way too often but were completely unaware of another issue that many be contributing to the cost of our electricity.

Have you ever heard of vampire appliances? I honestly didn't know a whole lot about the subject, but after read this eHow post and this eHow post I understand a little more about why they call it phantom power usage! After gaining that bit of knowledge, I decided to find out just how many of our electronics we leave plugged in 24/7/365. Boy was I surprised! Click on the link below to check out our results.

Not only do we leave 13 things constantly plugged in, but quite a few of those appliances we usually leave on all the time! Once we realized this, we knew we had to change this habit instantly or the electric bill would never go down. We discussed the options then decided to simply turn everything off at night as well as unplug all of the easier to reach electronic appliances.

So today I challenge you to do as I have above and write down your own list of plugged in/out electronics and work on changing this habit!
