Going Green 2014 - Day 4

For today's going green topic, let's discuss oral care. At first thought, one may think there isn't a whole lot that can be done to make oral care environmentally friendly, but you may be surprised. I've come up with sort of a two part post to explain how easy it is to make the transition.

This first table above shows suggestions for a few eco-friendly oral care alternatives to commercial products. Most of the products described can be found at your local health food store or online; and while some of these products may seem a bit expensive, consider it an investment. The metal dental utensils completely eliminate the need to purchase disposable plastic picks or waxed floss! Also if you make the toothpaste and mouthwash at home, then you'll never have to pay for a throw-away container of unknown chemicals again. I've included a few links to some DIY toothpaste and mouthwash formulas, for those interested.

Switching the products you use is one thing, but changing certain oral care habits are just as important. Improving your oral care habits can, not only save the Earth, but also prevent unforeseen, and unwanted, visits to the dentists office. Take a look below at the bulletined list of a few tips on changing oral care habits.

Today I challenge you to choose one oral care product or habit and work towards phasing it out of your life completely. For example: DH and I haven't used commercial toothpaste in over a year; instead every few months I mix up a small batch of all natural toothpaste that we enjoy. After you've finished one, repeat this process until you've completely reformed your old oral care ways. :)
